Let me be real with you.

I got laid off over a year ago. And I felt ALL of it — the shock, the embarrassment, the “What do I do now?” I polished my resume. I interviewed. And interviewed. And interviewed. I was trying to make a career shift, leaning into my transferable skills, betting on everything I knew I could bring to the table.

Corporate didn't see it.

Everyone around me kept saying, “You’re so skilled. Something will happen soon.” Those words were kind and full of support, but kindness doesn’t quiet the noise in your head at night. Waiting is its own kind of exhausting.

But Then — The Quiet Hit Different.

What I didn’t expect from that season of rejection and reflection was the silence. And in that silence, a question snuck up on me that I’d been too busy to answer:

“What do I actually want to do?”

That question cracked something open.

It challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and say it out loud: corporate isn’t for me anymore. I want to work from home. I want to make my own hours. I want to volunteer. I want to be present for my kids — really present, not just physically there while mentally somewhere else.

Building a business is hard. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. But we can do hard things!

I kept telling myself, “I have no idea how to run a business.” “I have no idea how to get clients,” “I don’t know how to create a website”. And then one day, it hit me like a freight train:

I actually do.

I’ve led teams across the US. I’ve managed budgets. Put together strategies. Negotiated contracts. Led projects from chaos to completion. I’ve built centers of excellence from scratch. I’ve sat in rooms where no one had a roadmap, and I made one.

While I was out there interviewing and trying to transition, I was focusing on the wrong things. I was trying to fit myself into someone else’s box when I had everything I needed to build my own.

As soon as I made that decision — the real decision, the scary one — the clarity came. The path appeared. So much was still unknown, but the unknown is my specialty. I’ve been building best-in-class operations my entire career. This was just another opportunity to challenge myself and build something again. Something that was mine.
