When Anxiety Meets the Driver’s Seat

Updated: Feb 9

My daughter is struggling with high anxiety and low confidence right now. In her first week of school:

  • Someone backed into her car and left without a note, leaving a big dent.

  • A few days later, she pulled forward to avoid another car backing into her—and ended up bumping a car pulling in next to her.

Two small fender benders in one week, and her driving confidence is shot.

Inside her head the narrative sounds like:

“I’m a horrible driver. I shouldn’t even be on the road. I’m an idiot around cars.”

Those are what we call limiting beliefs—the stories we tell ourselves (or others tell us) that keep us stuck and hold us back from being who we really are.

I can reassure her every day that she’s a good driver and neither incident was truly her fault. But I can’t rewrite her inner story for her. Only she can choose a new narrative—one where she’s a capable, learning driver who belongs on the road.

If your confidence is low and your anxiety is high, what story is running through your mind? Is it helping you move forward—or holding you back?

Coaching is about inviting those fears to the table, unpacking the story, and writing a new one that’s true and empowering.

Are you ready to explore what’s keeping you from doing what you truly want?
